RUBEN PADILLA

Magician-Writer-Teacher
Learning is M.A.G.I.C.
Founder & Artistic Director

Ruben Padilla has always been extremely curious. At the age of 13, he walked into a magic shop and never looked back. Three years later, he ran San Diego’s only magic school and instructed children and adults in the art of illusion.

He began his academic teaching career in San Diego with The Playwrights Project, an organization that teaches students how to write dramatic plays, culminating in a performance by professional actors. He stayed with the Playwrights Project for eight years before coming to Los Angeles, where he continued teaching for another, similar company that puts on plays featuring the students as actors.

Three years later, he joined forces with Master Teacher Tonyo Melendez and created a new academic program that celebrates learning and engages students with the powerful magic of their own experiences. This time, students explore their individual characters, learn about conflict resolutions in their everyday lives, discover accessible techniques that they can apply in school, and realize the empowering goal of positive self-expression. Final performances consist of stories and monologues written and performed by the students themselves, including magic, music, and audience interaction.

Mr. Padilla is also a writer. He’s written several screenplays, and spent two years as Story Analyst to Academy Award Winning writer and director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous). He was also the Personal Assistant and script consultant for actor Matthew Fox (“Lost”). In addition, he’s continued his passion for magic as a professional magician and is a member of the Academy of Magicial Arts at Hollywood’s exclusive Magic Castle.

As an actor, he’s appeared in many plays and has performed at such prestigious theatres as the Old Globe Theatre and the San Diego Repertory Theatre. For Ruben Padilla, Learning is M.A.G.I.C. is the result of over twenty-five years of teaching and creating. As a parent, he understands that the curiosity and wonder each child possesses is a valuable asset to creating a life filled with exploration and discovery. To date, thousands of students have benefited from Mr. Padilla’s unique and engaging style. Yet he remains a student himself, and continues to enjoy the magic of learning.

Mr. Padilla currently resides in Los Angeles with his girlfriend, writer/producer Carrie Specht. He is most proud of his role as “Daddy” to his adorable son, Knight.
